Dreams / The Universe

Hearing Songs in Dreams

I wake up with a song in my head. Every single day. EVERY single day. I can usually pinpoint where it came from the day before: playing in my car when I got home from work, overheard it on a TV commercial. I really never thought much about it and assumed it happened to everyone.

Until a number of years ago when I posted about it on Facebook and asked other people what songs they woke up with in their heads. Crickets.

So I started asking people in person….you hear songs in your head when you wake up each day, right? It was a pretty resounding NO. Hmmmmmm.

Time went by, the songs continued and then one day it occurred to me. Perhaps this is my higher self / my guides / the universe trying to communicate with me. SURELY if I wrote them down every day, I would begin to see a message. So I started writing them down:

Ever since the beginning, to keep the world spinning, it takes all kinds of kinds

I just want a little bit of everything

Heaven let your light shine down

(I was listening to a fair amount of country music at this time)

Mine would be you

Pain is the price of freedom

When I opened up my eyes I saw the sign

Got a little drunk last night

(Okay, I had drank a bit too much the night before this one. Hat tip universe. Very funny.)

But nothing really. I wasn't getting it. It seemed very random. So I quit and kind of forgot about it but the daily songs continued.

Then about a year ago, there was a discussion on one of the Facebook groups I'm on about exactly this kind of thing. There were different theories but a general agreement that angels (or guides) put these songs in our head for a reason. AHA! Just as I had suspected. So I went back to tracking them for awhile:

You can tell me that it's over. That the high was worth the pain.

But when the daylight comes, I'll have to go, but tonight I'm gonna hold you so close.

I wanna kiss you in the morning

Kind of seems like some kind of unrequited love affair in my dreams, no??

I STILL haven't figured it out. They don't seem to connect to my dreams in any particular way. This morning I woke up with the song You Don't Have to Leave Me Lucille in my head. Except the name was Irene. Weird. I don't know an Irene. And I haven't heard that song in YEARS. So does anyone have any theories? Do you hear songs in the morning? Help me solve this decades long mystery!

Hello, I found you on Pinterest of all places. I never bothered asking anyone about songs waking them up. I thought it was a normal thing as well. I may just write mine down as well to see what i find. Have you thought about it being an answer to a random question you have asked? I have thought maybe, at times, this could be some kind of answer. Idk if thats true or not but was a thought i had. Is it really that strange to have music playing in our minds when we wake? Sometimes i have noticed that it is time to get up and the music will correspond. Is this something that happens with you at times as well? I have really only just started my path. And a strange path it is at times.
    Well wishes to you

Hi Judy – It hadn’t occurred to me that it was a direct answer to a question I had asked. I’ll have to pay attention. But I don’t think I’ve had the songs specifically attempt to wake me up either. How cool!

    Yes, i hear songs, sometimes.
I have come to the conclusion that it is ussually a personal message from Spirit.
One that usually cheers me up or keeps on playing until i acknowledge receipt.
Is that song not – you picked a fine time to leave me lucille…
Re: you don’t have to leave me irene…
    The name irene means ‘peace’
Did you not want to leave your peace somewhere?
Dust of your feet and take it back ?

Ah! That’s a thought Anita. I was just thinking….I don’t know anyone named Irene but didn’t think about what that name meant. Thanks for another perspective!

This is something that I experience and understand that it’s messages coming through guiding me or offering insight into a situation. The morning of the women’s march I woke up with a the chorus of People Help the People by Birdy playing over and over so loud in my head. It says
    “People help the people
And if your homesick, give me your hand and I’ll hold it
    People help the people
And nothing will drag you down
Oh and if I had a brain, Oh and if I had a brain
I’d be cold as a stone and rich as the fool
That turned all those good hearts away”.

I too have the same thing! Song in my head EVERY day when I wake up. I told my husband about it, he just said You’re crazy! No one else I’ve ever mentioned this to had the experience or had ever heard of anyone who had. So nice to know I’m not really crazy and I’m also convinced the songs are communications from loved ones or a higher consciousness trying to get a message to me. I’ve pretty much accepted that this happens and it has actually become a comfort to me to know I have a connection with an energy force somewhere out there.

This happens to me all the time too. I do know that we get information from our dreams but I never thought to record the songs. I felt they were just left over from the day before. Maybe the song triggered something. Now I will pay more attention and see what patterns arise.

I have them all the time and I like them. I like to go to sleep with music on. I think they are music from the day before, depending on what music I was listening to as I went to sleep. If the classical station was on, then when I wake I’ll be hearing a piece that I don’t know the name of but can hum along!

This happens to me as well! I assumed it was messages from people I’ve lost over the years like friends, family members, etc. . . they are related somehow. . .

I had recently been feeling the presence of a friend who passed on a few years ago. I was in bed thinking of him as a spirit guide in my life. Then all the sudden I heard a song in my head that I hadn’t been thinking about at all recently, and it made me pause. Why was I imaging that song of all songs? Then it occurred to me that it was one my friend really liked. And if his presence is around then I should honor him and play that song. So I said that’s what I was doing outloud and called him in and said I’m dedicating this song to you my friend. Maybe it is a spirit guide communicating in your dream. Look up the lyrics to these songs, the artists, the year it was recorded, etc. Clues like that to determine what the message could be signifying for you at this time.

Songs play in my head a lot upon waking and it continues to repeat itself until I play the song or acknowledge receipt as someone else said. Most of the songs are ones that bring me comfort during my waking hours.

I had a deeply traumatic dream about watching someone I loved (but, whom I do not know in real life) get trapped and burn in a fire in a hospital. I was watching it on a screen of sorts, like a TV show. Anyhow, the song playing as I watched this happen was Reba McEntire’s One Promise Too Late. I haven’t heard the song in over a decade, at LEAST!! I feel very panicked now when I hear the song in my head. The song played SO vividly in my dream, word for word. It is the strangest thing. And I distinctly remember the part where she sings, “I know I can’t have you, but I never will forget you.” It was just a very gut-churning dream. I’m panicking a little just writing about it.

Hi Steph – What’s been happening quite a bit this year is that old timelines are being resolved. So there are many dreams that feel familiar or have some similarities to your current life, but also some distinct differences. They feel very real because they DID happen in another timeline or version of yourself. Likely it was coming to the surface to be released and the energy transmuted.

Hi. This happens to me as well…every other morning for years! Except the songs don’t exist in real life… I am creating fully constructed music word for word that I hear in my dreams!! And then I immediately wake up… I don’t understand it.

I recently had a dream where I was somewhere with my mother. We haven’t been together for over a decade. But in the dream the was this woman singing, i think on a television. Wherever it was, it was local. At first, i paid it no attention in my dream. Then someone told me, “Pay attention to the song. It is for you.”

The pretty woman was singing and the song/tune/melody/sound was beautiful. The woman was sing/asking…

“Do you remember how to love like a child?”

“Do you remember how to believe in love like a child does?”

“Do you remember the vows that you made before you grew and life came”

In the dream i could remember. I starting feeling warm feelings i hadn’t felt in years, not since i was small. I remembered exactly what she was asking me about. And then i woke up.

Wow! I’m very happy to have found this page. I also asked a few people I knew if this happens to them and it didn’t seem to happen every day as it does for me. I have a medical condition, hydrocephalus, so then I started to wonder if I wasn’t slowly going crazy, early-onset Alzheimer’s, or some form of dementia. I’m very happy to see that some folks experience this and found it to be comforting in whatever way. I usually like the music I hear so I just assumed it was me trying to keep calm and listen to music I liked after stressful events of the day before. I experience a lot of anxiety, pretty regularly now, as a lot of people I know do. Perhaps this is my coping mechanism.
I love music and wish I had learned how to play it as a child. Since the pandemic started, I have been doing online guitar lessons with my graduate studies at night to relieve some stress from the coursework while having my children at home, schooling online. Thank you all, for the optimistic look at this. It feels better to think it might not be me going crazy.

My husband passed away in January and about 2 months later I and my dad started mentioning that we would hear music when we woke up and occasionally during the day. I dream of songs playing like background music, lol. I believe music is our loved ones trying to communicate. Many things happen they say could be medical conditions but I’ve looked into them and I have none. I have also dreamt of places I’ve never seen before. Most recently one I had was of a place from Turkey called the 7 planets and the hall of records. A few months after my husband passed he came to me in a dream and handed me a key with the number 7. This place has 7 doors, 7 temples and is called the temple of the 7 planets. I have no idea what they mean but I’m still learning.
